Este acervo reúne cerca de vinte oito mil itens, com destaques para obras clássicas no campo das Ciências Biomédicas e da Saúde Pública, além de material bibliográfico pertencente a coleções de cientistas, médicos, pesquisadores e outros profissionais da área da saúde. Inclui, ainda, a produção acadêmica recente na área e a produção editorial da Casa de Oswaldo Cruz. Pretendemos apresentar ao público acervos científicos e históricos salva guardados pelo ILSL, que por exigirem condições especiais de acondicionamento e armazenamento ou por questões éticas, não permanecem expostos regularmente.Este livro, permitirá ao público refletir questões referentes ao pertencimento e principalmente sobre as responsabilidades do Instituto,seja com o indivíduo, seja com o mundo, no que tange a preservação e salvaguarda dos acervos ligados a Hanseníase. Neste momento, apresentamos cinco acervos, o de obras raras, o de microfilmagens de prontuários, o acervo iconográfico histórico, o da antiga farmácia e o da Unidade Museológica.Esperamos com esse material que, além de educativo e prazeroso, contribua para uma sociedade mais responsável e comprometedora com esses bens de inestimável valor.

The article describes the formation of the scientific periodicals collection of the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz Biomedical Sciences Library. It highlights the collection of rare scientific periodicals that extends from the 18th century to the 20th and encompasses valuable works in the biological sciences and health fields. The work also includes the creation of the institute by Oswaldo Cruz and the organization of the Library and documents the efforts of the Biomedical Sciences Library to promote access to scientific periodicals in different technological formats.

Laws, leaders, and legends of the modern National Library of Medicine.

PURPOSE: The paper is an expanded version of the 2007 Joseph Leiter National Library of Medicine (NLM)/Medical Library Association Lecture presented at MLA '07, the Medical Library Association annual meeting in Philadelphia in May 2007. It presents an historical accounting of four major pieces of legislation, beginning with the NLM Act of 1956 up through the creation of the National Center for Biotechnology Information. BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The transition from the United States Armed Forces Medical Library to the United States National Library of Medicine in 1956 was a major turning point in NLM's history, scope, and direction. The succeeding landmark legislative achievements--namely, the 1965 Medical Library Assistance Act, the 1968 Joint Resolution forming the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, and the 1988 authorization for the National Center for Biotechnology Information--transformed the library into a major biomedical communications institution and a leader and supporter of an effective national network of libraries of medicine. The leaders of the library and its major advocates--including Dr. Michael DeBakey, Senator Lister Hill, and Senator Claude Pepper-together contributed to the creation of the modern NLM.

Non-destructive assessment of parchment deterioration by optical methods.

A non-destructive and non-invasive method for quantitative characterization of parchment deterioration, based on spectral measurements, is proposed. Deterioration due to both natural aging (ancient parchments) and artificial aging (achieved by means of controlled UV irradiation and temperature treatment) was investigated. The effect of aging on parchment native fluorescence was correlated with its deterioration condition. Aging causes fluorescence intensity drop, spectral shift of the main peak, and an overall change in the fluorescence spectral features. Digital color imaging analysis based on visible reflectance from the parchment surface was also applied, and the correspondent color components (RGB) were successively correlated with the state of parchment deterioration/aging. The fluorescence and color imaging data were validated by analysis of historical parchments, aged between 50 and 2000 years and covering a large variety of states of deterioration. The samples were independently assessed by traditional microscopy methods. We conclude that the proposed optical method qualifies well as a non-destructive tool for rapid assessment of the stage of parchment deterioration.
